Obituary

William Manes, 85, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Monday, May 31, 2021, at his home in Columbus.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 10, 10:00 A.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Interment services will be held on Wednesday, August 18 at 10:00 AM, in the Columbus Cemetery, Columbus, Nebraska.

Bill was born October 22, 1935, in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Daniel and Violet (Jackson) Manes. He grew up in Iowa served in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. He returned to Iowa and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a mechanic. He then moved to Omaha and worked at a hot tar roofer for many years. He met Marilyn Wilderman in 1993 and enjoyed spending time at his cabin at Duncan Lakes. They also enjoyed playing pool together and visiting surrounding towns and Nebraska football.

Bill retired at age 62 but decided to continue working as a custodian in 1999 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Omaha. In 2014 he moved to Columbus and worked for the Columbus Public Schools also as a custodian until 2017. His pride and joy was gardening, feeding the birds, squirrels, and cats, as well as enjoying crossword puzzles.

William is survived by his sister Mary Jane in Iowa. He was precede in death by his parents and brother Don.
