June 20, 1929 – March 8, 2024
Vernon G. Beckmann, 94, formerly of Columbus, Nebraska, died peacefully on March 8, 2024 at Ridgewood Care and Rehabilitation, in Seward, Nebraska.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 23, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Patrick Sparling officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday, from 9:00 AM until service time, at the church. Private family interment with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post 84 will be held in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Endowment Fund, American Legion Honor Guard, or Camp Luther of Nebraska.
Vern was born on June 20, 1929, in Seward, to George and Frieda (Hillman) Beckmann. He attended St. John's Lutheran School, and graduated from Seward High School in 1948.
Vern enlisted in the US.Navy during the Korean War, serving aboard the USS John A Bole for four years.
After serving in the military, Vern attended Lincoln School of Commerce, Lincoln, Nebraska, receiving his diploma for Advanced Accounting and CPA Training. This is also where he met Ruby Kellogg and they were married April 23, 1954. Vern accepted a job with Nebraska Public Power Systems in Columbus, NPPS transitioned into Loup Power District, and after a 38 year career, he retired as Administrative Services Manager. He served as Treasurer of the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce, chaired the Columbus Area Personnel Association, and served on the Columbus Municipal Golf Board. He served for over 35 years on the Camp Luther Finance Committee and worked on volunteer projects at the camp.
Vern joined the American Legion in 1954, served as Post 84 commander in 1960, served on the Honor Guard for 54 years, was an Honorary Life Member, chaired the Boys State committee, founded the Post Bugle paper, and organized the Legion Chorus.
Vern was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church , served as Finance Committee Chair during the 1980's building program, was a founding member of the Immanuel Lutheran Endowment Fund, and sang in the choir.
In the 1960's, Vern was a part-time insurance agent for American Family Insurance. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends
Vern is survived by his son Stanley, Woodridge, IL, daughter Patricia Huber, Beaverton, OR, daughter Jane (Cecil) Grant, Lincoln, NE, grandson Cameron Huber, San Francisco, CA, sister Margaret Meyer, Plymouth, WI, brother-in-law John Seevers, Seward, NE, many nieces and nephews.
Vern was preceded in death by wife Ruby, parents George and Frieda Beckmann, sister Arlene Seevers, brother-in-law Richard Meyer, in-laws Marion and Irene Kellogg, sister-in-law Marilyn Vosler, brother-in-law Robert Kellogg, sister-in-law Eleanor Fenton.
