Obituary

It is with the greatest sadness that we announce the passing of our loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Sheryl Jean (Sylvester) Wemhoff, who left us on January 8, 2026 at the age of 63. She fought a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer, and through it all, God gave us His greatest gift of time—time to create memories, to live life with purpose, and to have conversations and share stories that we will cherish forever.

Sheryl was born on June 21, 1962, to Merrill Dean and Betty (Vaught) Sylvester in Columbus, Nebraska. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1981 and went on to build a life filled with love, joy, and laughter. In 1983, she met Tim Wemhoff, at Wishbones in Columbus. They started dating and enjoyed watching each other bowl on their separate bowling leagues. Sheryl and Tim were married on September 5, 1985, at St. Isidore's Catholic Church in Columbus. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in September of last year.

Throughout her life, Sheryl worked at a variety of places, always with a smile on her face and kindness in her heart. She worked at Deno's Diner, Barney's Pizza, and D&L just to name a few.  Most recently she worked at the Goodwill in Norfolk which went hand-in-hand with her love of thrift shopping and meeting new people.  Her kindness and generous spirit were felt by all who knew her.

Sheryl loved being in the kitchen baking and cooking.  She loved animals. She enjoyed reading, spending time with family, and making crafts, but nothing brought her more joy than her grandchildren and attending their various activities. She was always at wrestling matches, their baseball and softball games, soccer and volleyball games, and never missed her granddaughter's dance recitals.  Sheryl was the epitome of kindness—always quick to lend a hand, offer a kind word, or make anyone feel welcome, even in a room full of strangers.

She is survived by her husband, Tim Wemhoff, of Creston; her children, Michael (Jessi) Wemhoff of Lincoln, Chelsie (Matt) Croghan of David City, Travis (Kendal) Wemhoff of Cody, WY, and Natascha (Jon) Hames of Columbus; and her beloved grandchildren, Karsyn Croghan, Cooper Croghan, and Kade Croghan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Merrill Dean Sylvester and Betty Sylvester, her brother, Morris Sylvester. Father and mother-in-law, Lawrence & Angela Wemhoff, brother-in-laws Al Hain & Louie Euteneuer. Sheryl will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were blessed to know her.

A visitation will be held at St. Isidore's Catholic Church on Monday, January 12, 2026 from 4 - 6 p.m. with a 6 p.m. rosary.  Visitation will continue at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2026, with Funeral Mass following at 10:30 a.m. at St. Isidore's Catholic Church.  Burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers and statues, Sheryl requested donations be made to family wishes & for a bench at the new cancer center at Columbus Community Hospital.  The service can be viewed live on Gass Haney Funeral Home Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057043736890

Rest in peace, Sheryl. Your love and light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew you.
