Shawn Louis, age 58, of Columbus passed away on November 6, 2023, at Bryan East hospital in Lincoln, NE.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on November 18, 2023, at Gass Haney Funeral Home with Rev. Adam Lassen officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to service.  Memorials are suggested to the Epilepsy Foundation.

Shawn Louis was born on August 20, 1965, to Harold and Marlene (Lord) Louis in Columbus.  Shawn attended Columbus Public Schools and graduated from Columbus High School.  After graduation he went to work for Central Plains Milling (CPM), working there his entire career. Shawn was the warehouse manager.

Shawn lived on the family farm southeast of town. This farm was homesteaded by the Louis family in 1856 and is the oldest one-family ownership farm in Platte County. President Abraham Lincoln himself signed the homestead document. Shawn was very proud of his heritage.

Shawn enjoyed watching Royals baseball and rarely missed watching a game. Recently Shawn went to Kansas City for a three-game series with his friends. It was all he talked about for weeks. Shawn also loved Nebraska football and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Shawn had a passion for horse racing, and spent a lot of time at the Columbus Ag Park with family and friends. Shawn's family grew up at the Ag Park. His Grandfather Charlie was a board member and worked in security. His brother Brandon (and best friend) owned a few racehorses, which added to their enjoyment of the sport.

Shawn had a passion for life, so strong that he overcame a drowning. The doctors told the family it was doubtful he would make it.  Doctors attributed his survival to the love of his family, strong will to live, and physical conditioning due to riding his bike to work daily.

Shawn always had a smile on his face and a little harmless orneriness about him that will be missed by all.
