Obituary

Phyllis Hassebrook went to her heavenly home on Monday, January 13, 2025, her 102nd birthday.  Phyllis died at her home in Columbus.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 10:30 AM, at Zion Lutheran Church, Grand Prairie, with PMA Ron Lofgren officiating.  Interment will be in the parish cemetery.  Visitation will be on Friday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue Saturday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church.  Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Grand Prairie or to  the church.

Phyllis was born January 13, 1923, during a blizzard, on the family farm southwest of Leigh, Nebraska to Henry and Cornelia (Wullschleger) Hoessel. Her father always told her they found her in a snow drift.

Phyllis was baptized on October 25, 1925, and confirmed her Christian faith through confirmation on May 31, 1936, both at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Leigh.  She attended District 23 grade school where she graduated from the 8th grade on June 1, 1936.  On February 3, 1946, she was united in marriage to Edward Hassebrook at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.  Phyllis was a hard-working farm wife.  She did gardening, canning, sewed clothing, helped with the chores and milking, and was a great baker.  The couple farmed north of Platte Center until 1989 when they moved off the farm and into Platte Center.  She enjoyed quilting, making quilts to snuggle her great grandchildren with, crocheting doilies for the grandchildren, Afghans, and doing ceramic work.

Daughter – Mary (Les) Svatora of Columbus, NE
Son – Chuck (Kate Borchman) Hassebrook of Lincoln, NE
Daughter-in-law – Evie Hassebrook of Lincoln, NE
21 Grandchildren
40 Great Grandchildren (with two more on the way)
1 Great-great Grandchild
Sister – Shirley Gersib of Columbus, NE
Sister-in-law – Edna Hoessel of Columbus, NE

Daughter – Vickie Carlson
Sisters – Ruth (Adolph) Rickert and Gladys (Walter) Luckey
