Obituary

Rev. Monsignor Melvern Wiese, 90 of West Point, Nebraska, died Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at the Franciscan Health Care Center in West Point.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2021, at 10:30 AM, at SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Clarkson, Nebraska, with Archbishop George Lucas celebrating the Mass. Interment will be in Clarkson Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM vigil service, at the church. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. Memorials are those of the donor or family choice. The funeral Mass will be broadcast live on Gass Haney Funeral Home Facebook page.

Rev. Monsignor Melvern A. Wiese was born May 23, 1931, in Stanton County, Nebraska, the first born child of Bernard "Ben" and Eleanor (Knust) Wiese. He had two brothers – Wilfred and Maynard, and one sister – Dianne.

Melvern went to Conception, Missouri, for high school and college. After graduation he attended the Iowa Provincial Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. On May 11, 1957, Melvern and twelve other classmates were ordained as priests by Archbishop Gerald T. Bergan, DD at St. Cecelia Cathedral in Omaha, Nebraska.

Fr. Mel was assigned as an assistant pastor at St. Ludger at Creighton, St. Philip Neri and St. Bernadette in Omaha. He later served congregations at St. Mary in Hubbard in 1968, and then St. John's – Petersburg, St. Peter – Ewing, St. Ludger – Creighton, St. Wenceslaus – Dodge, and St. Mary – Leigh and SS Cyril & Methodius – Clarkson.

Fr. Mel taught part-time high school theology at St. Ludger in Creighton, Notre Dame Academy and Ryan High School in Omaha, Sacred Heart in Emerson, and St. Mary in O'Neill, and at one school taught Latin. He took extension courses offered by Creighton University and was awarded a Masters of Divinity Degree which he received at the graduation ceremony in May of 1976, at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.

Fr. Mel was at one time a member of the Nebraska Catholic Conference Board which would meet in Lincoln, and represent the dioceses of Omaha, Lincoln, and Grand Island. He received the honor of being appointed a Chaplain to His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, with the title of Monsignor. Celebrating fifty years as a priest, Monsignor retired from parish ministry and became the chaplain of St. Joseph Hillside Villa in West Point, Nebraska, where he lived for the last 14 years.
