Obituary

Mary Fellows Drummond, 99, of Clarkson, Nebraska, died Friday, April 22, 2022, at Clarkson Community Care Center under the care of care center staff and Hospice care givers.

The funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. April 26, 2022 at New Zion Presbyterian Church in Clarkson. Burial will be at Clarkson National Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 9:30 AM until service time, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Clarkson Public Library, where she was a volunteer for several years. She was also instrumental in establishing the library.

Mary was born Feb. 9, 1923, in Clark's Green, Pennsylvania. Her parents were the late Eugene H and Anne Edwards Fellows, and she was the granddaughter of the late Judge Henry M. Edwards of Scranton, Pennsylvania, president judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Lackawanna County for many years.

Mary was a graduate of Keystone Junior College, LaPlume, Pennsylvania, and Western Connecticut State College, New Britain, Connecticut, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature and history. In Pennsylvania, she was active as a Girl Scout and a leader, as well as a camp counselor.

A newspaperwoman for most of her life, she began as a reporter for the Scranton Tribune, now the Times-Tribune, and later worked for the Bridgeport, Connecticut, Post and Telegram, The Hartford Courant, and The Watertown, New York, Daily Times before joining The Omaha World-Herald in 1980 as a copy editor. She also spent two years with
Sikorsky Aircraft, Stratford, Connecticut, as editor of the plant newspaper.

Mary retired in 1988 to live in Clarkson, where she kept and rode horses and did some free-lance writing. Several of her articles appeared in magazines. In later years, she was employed part-time by the late Harlan Hamernik at Wild Plums Arboretum in Clarkson and the Clarkson Bakery. She was a member of New Zion Presbyterian Church, Clarkson, where she was an usher for many years and a member of several committees. Mary served on the boards of the Clarkson Public Library, the Clarkson Housing Authority and the Clarkson Historical Society.

Mary was married in 1943 to Robert W. Drummond at Clark's Summit, Pennsylvania. They were divorced in 1968, and he died in 1980. She enjoyed reading, writing, gardening and baking, as well as visits from her family and friends.

Survivors are her daughter, Molly, and her husband, Douglas B. Miron, of Winona, Minnesota, and daughter, Anne Vinyard, of Hermon, New York; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
