Lance
Rankin
December 11, 1969 – June 15, 2025
Lance Rankin, 55, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, June 15, 2025, at the Columbus Community Hospital.
Born December 11, 1969, in Lincoln, Nebraska, Lance grew up in Northeast Lincoln surrounded by lifelong friends. After graduating from high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy, including active duty during Desert Storm.
Upon returning home, Lance began a long and successful career with Cargill, where he eventually became Superintendent—a role he was incredibly proud of and truly loved.
In 1996, Lance married Becky Winbolt-Rankin. They were together for 32 years and raised four amazing children: Jakobi (Chicago), Shawn, Anastacia, and Tanner, all of Lincoln.
Lance loved his kids with his whole heart. He was proud of who they are, supported them unconditionally, and made sure they always knew how much he cared. They were the greatest joy of his life. He was also excited to become a grandfather and was eagerly anticipating the arrival of his first granddaughter this October.
A diehard Pittsburgh Steelers fan, Lance wore his black and gold wherever he went. He traveled to numerous games over the years, including an unforgettable AFC Championship. His encyclopedic knowledge of football trivia was unmatched, and he loved sharing it with anyone who would listen. Lance also coached youth football for Assurity Midget Football, forming lasting bonds with the young players he mentored.
When he wasn't watching football, Lance could often be found at the family cabin, fishing and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. He found joy in the simple moments and cherished the tight-knit community of neighbors who became like family. He also held his childhood friendships close, nurturing those lifelong bonds throughout the years.
Lance was known for his sharp wit, infectious humor, and love of quirky facts—especially when it came to animals. He had a unique gift for making people laugh and feel at ease.
He held a deep and abiding love for his grandparents, "Chief" and Grandma Rankin, whose guidance left a lasting impact on his life. He treasured their relationship and carried their influence with him always.
Lance also shared a special bond with his nephews—Jaime, Max, and Ryne Hirschbrunner—whom he adored deeply. Their love and care meant the world to him, especially in his final days.
Lance was preceded in death by his best friend, Shawn Schwaller; his father, James Rankin; his sister, Lori Wunderlich; his beloved grandparents Edgar "Chief" and Vernell Rankin, and Harold and Alwine Larsen; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He is survived by his four children: Jakobi, Shawn, Anastacia, and Tanner Rankin and his mother; Connie Lee Sweet..
A service will be held on Monday at 1:00 PM at 1135 Eastridge Drive, Lincoln, Nebraska, followed by a lunch gathering to celebrate Lance's life.
Memorials will be determined by his children at a later date.
