Obituary

Kimberly Duane Schaefer was born to Duane "Buck" Swanson and Bernadine "Beans" Mattson, on November 9, 1960, in Osceola, Nebraska. She lost her earthly battle to cancer, on July 10, 2025, in the comfort of her home in Columbus, Nebraska, surrounded by her loved ones, holding the hands of both of her surviving sons. She was 64 years old.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 10:30 AM, at 1C/The Sanctuary, with Pastor Randy Longacre officiating.  Interment with military honors by The American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard, will be in the Stromsburg City Cemetery, Stromsburg, Nebraska. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Thursday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church.  Memorials are suggested as those of the family or donors choice.

Kimberly came into the world, as the baby sister of 7 siblings – 5 brothers and 2 sisters. They had a family jingle to remember all the kids' names. "Larry, Lance, Brian, Brett, Toni, Fred, and Lynette…AND Kim." Growing up in Stromsburg, Kim spent her time at the local swimming pool, riding bikes, roller skating, and hanging out at the Dairy Inn. During her high school years she worked at the Dairy Inn. Kim graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1979. In 1985, Kim joined the United States Air Force and spent the next ten years serving in Italy, Germany and in San Antonio, Texas at Lackland AFB, as a drill sergeant, and Kelly AFB, working in intelligence.

In 1988, Kimberly and Randy Schaefer welcomed her first born son, Jacob. With her Air Force career in full motion, she and Randy decided to stay good friends. In 1990, Kimberly and Craig Rollins Sr were united in marriage, in San Antonio, Texas, where they were both stationed in the Air Force. On Thanksgiving Day in 1993, they adopted Kimberly's second son, Craig Jr, who grew up with the nickname Pilgrim. 3 years later, in 1996, they gave birth to Kimberly's third and final son, Jadahn, in Washington DC, where Craig was stationed, and where his family was from. In 1999, Kimberly and Craig parted ways. Kimberly and her 3 sons moved to Hamilton, Montana, with the license plate 3BZNLDY, 3 boys and a lady. As a super mom of 3, she worked multiple jobs, including rural mail carrier, bus driver, in home hospice nurse, and as a pharmacist technician. She then went on to graduate from The University of Montana, in 2002, as a Pharmacist Technician. Despite the extraordinary amount of time she spent earning a living for her family, she always made sure the boys were fed and cared for, often at the sacrifice of a good sleep routine.  In 2003, Kimberly and Randy reignited their flame, and were joined in marriage, in Hamilton, Montana. The next year, they all packed up and moved to Columbus, Nebraska, where Randy's family was from. In 2008, her and Randy decided to part ways, and stay good friends. She continued working as a Pharmacy tech at Walgreens, and later at Columbus Community Hospital. Her 3 boys went on to graduate from Columbus High School, Jacob started a flooring installation business, Pilgrim went on to the Army, and Jadahn ended up in the Navy.

In 2013, Kimberly welcomed her first born grandson, Phoenyx, who from the moment they met, was the apple of her eye. Little did she know she would be the infamous "Nana" to 5 grand children by the year 2021. She lived for her grandchildren. She bought a new Harley with a sidecar attached, just so she could give them rides. She loved her Harley's and wanted her grandkids to enjoy them too. She was constantly having sleepovers, spoiling them rotten like a good Nana does. Anybody who knows her, knows that Nana was her favorite title.

During her time on this Earth, Kimberly impacted so many lives and never stopped serving. She rode for Patriot Guard Riders and the Legion Riders, serving fallen military members. She was very involved with Gold Star familes, and spent many weekends paying tribute to them. In2024, she became a Gold Star Mom herself, after she lost her youngest son Jadahn, to a motorcycle accident while he was stationed in San Diego. Even through her own turmoil, she still made it a priority to serve others. She was the neighborhood Nana, friend, nurturer, and drill sergeant (depending on how you were behaving). Kimberly's memory lives on in every single person that she has loved, and her legacy will never be forgotten.

Kimberly is preceded in death by her son Jadahn, brother Brian, mother Bernadine, father Duane, niece Dawn, nephews Noah and Joseph, best friend Gary, and Grandson Corbin.

Kimberly is survived by her former husbands Randy and Craig, sons Jacob (Tristann), Craig, Dustin(Andrea), Jared, and Terence; daughter Neely (Kris), grandchildren Phoenyx, Lennox, Kastiny, Hendrix, Onyx, Jayden, Karli, Lauryn, Brea, Axl. Sisters Lynette (Tom), and Toni, brothers Fred, Lance (Deb), Larry (Glenda), Brett (Patte), many nieces and nephews, cousins, and an abundant amount of friends.
