Obituary

Jon Richard Reins, 71, of Platte Center, Nebraska, died on Thursday, August 28th, at his family home.  Jon was born on April 15th, 1954, in Columbus, Nebraska to Richard and Margaret (Cyphers) Reins.  He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Jon attended District #11 (a one-room schoolhouse) and Immanuel Lutheran for elementary, and Monroe and Lakeview High School.

Jon attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.  He later returned home to attend to the family farm with his parents. Their dedication to agriculture was recognized when they were honored as the Aksarben Farm Family of the Year in the 1980s. Along with working at the family farm, Jon was a sales rep for Pioneer Seeds for several years, hosting several memorable 'Field Day' celebrations.

An avid athlete, Jon played in several local softball leagues (one year he broke his leg and was in a full leg cast for several months) and basketball leagues (where for many years after the games, many beers were enjoyed at Jack's Bar across the street in Platte Center).  In his youth, to stay in shape, you could also find him jogging in a vinyl sweatsuit on the country roads around the farm. Jon was a long-time fan and supporter of Nebraska athletics. Jon enjoyed working cattle and looked forward to the annual trip to move the cattle out to the pasture. Every year he was excited for hunting season with his friends and family, and later, his grandsons.  He was a lover of blues and old country music, western movies, the Celtics (Larry Bird years), sour cream raisin pie and could often be found watching re-runs of M.A.S.H.

Jon married his wife Karri, in June of 2015.  They recently celebrated 10 years of marriage.

After retiring from farming, Jon enjoyed traveling to Colorado to visit his daughters, visiting with friends, playing cards, calling (and learning how to Facetime) his grandchildren and getting pedicures with Karri.

Jon was one of those people who never knew a stranger.  He made people laugh, made them feel welcome, and left them with stories they'd tell for years. He was kind, quick-witted, and always ready to lend a hand. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Jon is survived by his wife, Karri (Baker) Reins, two daughters, Sara Bencomo and April Reins (Matthew Todd), step-daughter, Kasi Schwingle (Jeremiah), in-laws, Carol and Doug Lennartson, seven grandchildren - Alden, Beck and Kyle Bencomo, Ruby and Hank Todd, Aleeah Schafer and Harlee Schwingle, sister, Christine Shank and many nieces and nephews.

Son-In-Law: Victor Bencomo
Sister and Brother-In-Law:  Cheryl and Steve Thomas
