John H. Moore, Jr., 82, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Monday, July 8, 2024, at the Journey House in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 13 at 10:00 AM, at First United Methodist Church in Columbus with Pastor Kuensik Lee officiating. Interment with military honors by The American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard, will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery, Columbus. Visitation will be on Friday from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue Saturday from 9:00 until service time at the church. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Hartman Post 84, U.S. Submarine Service, Nebraska Base USSVI "Sub Vets", or the donor's choice.
John was born December 5, 1941, in McCook, Nebraska, to John and Sylvia (Casper) Moore. John graduated from Madison-Mayodan High School in Madison, North Carolina, in 1960. He entered the United States Navy on June 21, 1960, serving on the USS Chivo #341. He was honorably discharged on June 12, 1964. On September 1, 1962, John was united in marriage to Genene Wunderlich in Columbus. After his discharge from the Navy, John went to Spartan School of Aeronautics' in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he trained as a jet mechanic. This training took the family to California, where John worked as a mechanic for United Airlines. After two years, the family moved back to Columbus.
Upon returning to Columbus, John began working with his father-in-law, Chris Wunderlich. In the early 1980's John took over the family construction business and renamed it Moore Construction. John was an excellent craftsman, making numerous desks, cabinets, and built a number of homes. John was an avid Husker fan, holding season tickets for over 35 years. He loved spending time with his grandkids, going on road trips, and spending time at the American Legion. John was very proud of his service to his country and was very involved in the "Sub Vets" group in Nebraska.
John is survived by his three children, Sue (Jim) Schoening of Columbus; Chris (Jan) Moore of Unadilla; and Jen (Matt) Myers of Kearney; seven grandchildren, Jenna Schoening of Lincoln, Allison (Adam) Kriz of Lincoln, Turner (Rachel) Moore of Syracuse, Morgan (Tyler) O'Connell of Lincoln, Madeline Myers of Tampa, Florida, Chloe Moore of Lincoln, and Max Myers of St. Louis, Missouri; six great-grandchildren; Audrey Burns, Noah Schoening, Jack Kriz, Greyson O'Connell, Rooney Moore, and Jamie Kriz; sister Gwen Haller of Ft. Collins, CO; brother Douglas (Dee Dee) Moore of Goodyear, AZ; and brother Ken Moore of Lincoln, NE.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Genene on April 10, 2024.
