Obituary

James F. Duesman, M.D., of Columbus, Nebraska, formerly of Rock Island, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2025.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey, Nebraska, with Fr. Rod Kneifl celebrating the Mass.  Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to the wishes of the family or donor's choice.

James Duesman was born on July 20, 1932 in Humphrey, Nebraska, the son of Victor and Monica (Lubischer) Duesman. He married the former Judith James on June 20, 1964 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Dr. Duesman graduated from Creighton University school of medicine in 1957, with General surgery training at Creighton University Hospital and Thoracic surgery training at Colombia Presbyterian Medical Center, New York, New York. He was Board Certified in both General and Thoracic surgery.

He practiced at Trinity Medical Center, and the former Franciscan, Moline Public and Lutheran Hospitals in the Illinois Quad Cities area.

Dr. Duesman was a member of Saint Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Knights of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, American College of Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American Medical Association and the Rock Island County Medical Society.

Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth Castelli and her husband James Castelli, West Chester, Pennsylvania; son, Douglas Duesman and his wife Anelle Fortuno Duesman, Las Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren, John "Jack" Scott and Alexander Duesman; sister, Mary (Don) Brockhaus, Columbus, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Joan Duesman of Humphrey, Nebraska; many nieces and nephews.

Dr. Duesman was preceded in death by his wife, Judith; grandson, William J. Scott; parents; sister, Catherine Smith; brothers, Paul Duesman and William Duesman.

In life, Dr. Duesman was a classical music enthusiast; especially symphonies. He cherished time working in his garden and growing vegetables. He loved traveling. Including, but not limited to an African safari, Egypt, the Holy Land, Italy and much of the Middle East. He grew-up in a deeply Catholic home and carried his faith with him throughout his life. He came from a family of undertakers, but was motivated to become a medical doctor by way of a health issue when he was age 10. He met his wife while a resident physician at Creighton and she was a nursing student.
