Obituary

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Jadahn Carl Schaefer, 27, of San Diego, California, (formerly of Columbus, Nebraska), died Friday, January 5, 2024, as a result of a motorcycle accident in California.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 18th, from 4:00-8:00 PM at 1C Sanctuary in Columbus. Jadahn's Celebration of Life service will take place on Friday, January 19, at 10:00 AM, at 1C Sanctuary, with visitation being held one hour prior to the service.  Military honors will be rendered in Columbus following the funeral service by the American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard.  Interment will be at 2:30 PM that afternoon at the Omaha National Cemetery with Naval Military Honors.  The service will be broadcast live on 1 C Sanctuary Livestream at this link https://www.1cchurch.com/livestream.html

Jadahn was born April 7th, 1996, at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, to Craig and Kimberly (Swanson) Rollins. Jadahn was a 2014 graduate of Columbus High school. At the age of 18, Jadahn Carl Schaefer enlisted in the United States Navy and attended Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois, where he received his Basic Training. After successful completion he attended Interior Communications Electrician "A" School, where he became an Interior Communication Fireman Apprentice (ICFA).

His first tour of duty was onboard USS ESSEX (LHD 2) April 2015 to June 2022, where he excelled and advanced from Fireman to Petty Officer First Class. IC1 Schaefer maintained an exceedingly complex Interior Communications Suite of over 12,000 pieces of electronics and mechanical equipment. During his tenure, Jadahn deployed three times throughout the 5th, 6th, and 7th Fleet Areas of Responsibility, from April to December 2015, August 2018 to March 2019, and most recently from August 2021 to March 2022.

In October 2022, he graduated as a Distinguish Military Graduate of Closed-Circuit TV (CCTV) Technician "C" school and reported to Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command San Diego as the lead CCTV Technician and was currently assigned.

His decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), Good Conduct Ribbon (two awards), National Defense Medal, Operation Inherent Resolve, Global War on Terrorism (Expeditionary), Sea Service Deployment (three awards), Expert Marksman and various unit and command awards.  He was a member of the American Legion Hartman Post 84.

Jadahn is survived by his Mother, Kimberly Schaefer of Columbus, NE; Father, Craig (DeeDee) Rollins Sr, Las Vegas, NV; Stepfather, Randy Schaefer, Columbus NE; three brothers, Jake (Tristann) Schaefer, Columbus, NE, SSgt Craig Rollins Jr, Ft. Campbell, KY, and Terence Rollins, Manassas, VA; four nephews, Phoenyx, Lennox, Hendrix, and Onyx Schaefer, Columbus, NE; a niece, Kastiny Schaefer, Columbus, NE; stepbrothers, Jared Schaefer, North Platte, NE, Dustin (Andrea) Schaefer, Duncan, NE and Brea & Axl Schaefer; stepsister, Neely (Kris) Gernstein, Jayden, Karli, and Lauryn Gerstein; Special friend, Lt Giana Street, Lemon Grove, CA; his dogs Cujo, Kona, and Kyra, and  a host of Aunts, Uncles and cousins.

Jadahn was preceded in death by his Grandparents Bernadine and Duane Swanson, Pearl Patterson and Gordon Rollins, Kenneth and Gloria Schaefer, Bo Patterson, Uncle Brian 'Radar' Boye, and cousins Pvt Noah L Boye and Sgt Joseph L Boye.
