Gordon was born September 29, 1922, to Gustave and Clara (Loseke) Asche on the family farm near Leigh in Stanton County, Nebraska. He was the youngest of three children. Gordon was baptized and confirmed his Christian faith through confirmation, all at Zion Lutheran Church.
Gordon attended District 42, Stanton County Grade School, completing grades 1, 2, and 3, all in the same year. He attended Leigh High School for two months but quit to help with harvest and the operations of the farm when he was 13 years old. Because of the death of his father when Gordon was only 11 years old, he had to assume much responsibility for the farm at a very young age which greatly impacted his life.
Gordon married Mabel Hake on September 26, 1945, at Zion Lutheran. They made their home on the family farm where they raised their three children – Darrell, Ron, and Lori. Gordon and Mabel lived on the farm until 1995 when he retired from farming and moved to Columbus. In 2011 they moved to Lincoln. Mabel passed away on February 7, 2015, and Gordon remained in Lincoln the rest of his life.
Gordon was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh where he served as trustee and enjoyed working at the church's food stand at the Colfax County Fair for numerous years. He was a member of the National Farmers Organization (NFO), served on the local precinct voter's committee, and was a 4-H member.
Gordon was a true farmer at heart and loved animals, especially dogs. He enjoyed playing cards and was always willing to join in on a game of pitch or poker with the grandkids.
During the time when Gordon resided in assisted living and skilled nursing facilities, he enjoyed going on road trips. On his last road trip, to see the family farm, on his 101st birthday, Gordon talked about the four things that had the most impact on his life. These four things were: the dust bowl years in the 1930's, the Great Depression, World War II, and losing his father at such a young age forcing him to assume most of the responsibility of the farming operations in his teens.
Gordon's family was his most cherished treasure, and he was happiest when all were gathered with him.
