Glen W. Bower, 92, of Stromsburg, Nebraska, died Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.
Private family services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus, Nebraska, with Rev. Patrick Sparling officiating. Interment with military honors will be in the Columbus Cemetery. Public visitation will be on Monday, September 27 from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the wishes of the family or donor's choice.
Glen W. Bower was born on October 14, 1928, on a farm near Platte Center, Nebraska, to Harold and Susie (Pinson) Bower. He attended Platte County District 11 Grade School and Platte Center High School. Glen worked on the family farm before entering the United States Army on January 16, 1951, during the Korean War. He drove tanks and trucks and was a cook. After serving on the front line in a tank outfit, he received his honorable discharge on October 15, 1952. He was honored with the Sharpshooters Medal in rifle and carbine, the National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Korean Medal.
Glen was united in marriage to Joann Behle on January 18, 1953, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus, where he had also been confirmed. Glen worked as a farmhand and for a time worked at Kluck Feed Lot before moving to Stromsburg in 1965 where he began working for John Deere as a mechanic in several of their locations. In 1982 he opened his own mechanic shop. Glen loved working with his hands, and was a workaholic. Glen was an avid gardener and at times had more than one garden to take care of. He was a 40 year member of the Stromsburg Fire Department, a life member of the VFW, and member of the Stromsburg American Legion. Glen and Joann were charter member of the ambulance squad. Glen was one of the first EMT's in the State of Nebraska, and served on the Stromsburg EMT Squad for 30 years.
