Fred Mackey, 92, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Monday, September 23, 2024, at Arbor Care Center in Fullerton, Nebraska.

Private family interment will be held at Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Alliance in Alliance, Nebraska.

Frederick Robert Mackey Jr. was born on December 12, 1931, to Fred and Betty (Miller) Mackey, in Chadron, Nebraska. He graduated high school in Alliance and attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He entered the United States Navy in 1951 and served until 1954 during the Korean War. During his time in the military, he was awarded the China Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal, U.S National Service Medal, and the Korean Presidential Unit and Citation Badge.

Fred married Marion Duncan on June 16, 1961 and the couple adopted two sons. On October 14, 1989, Fred was united in marriage to Marlyn Zimbelman. He worked for many years as a plumber in Long Beach, California, where he retired. Fred and Marlyn lived in Idaho City, Idaho, and eventually settled in Columbus. He was a life member of VFW Post #8615, American Legion Hartman Post 84, Long Beach Lodge #327, Scottish Rite, Valley of Lib El Korah Shriner of Boise, Idaho.
