Obituary

Dorsie Eugene Ivy's journey on earth ended on July 23, 2025 in Columbus, Nebraska, as his soul has gone to be with his Creator.

Dorsie, 84, was born on January 1,1941 at home in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Dorsie Eugene Ivy, Sr. and Mercedes Billie (Hon) Ivy. His father died in a WWII training plane crash when he was 2 years old, and he, along with his younger brother, Stanley, were raised by their mother and stepfather, John Fuller (Pop), in a blue-collar, working-class family.

He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1959 where he had the lead in musicals, played tennis and basketball and was a class leader.

He became interested in a church vocation while still a teenager and, after high school, attended Grinnell College, where he majored in American Studies. He also earned Bachelor of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry Degrees from the Chicago Theological Seminary.

He and Patricia Paris were married on Nov. 27,1965 in Manchester, Iowa. A son, Darren, was born to them in 1978.

During his life, Dorsie served as a pastor in Mason City, Iowa; Quincy, Illinois; Madison, Nebraska; and Columbus. He founded the Center for Growth in Clear Lake, Iowa and served several church interims in Iowa. He retired from Federated Church in Columbus in 2002.

He liked reading, listening to music, collecting numerous items, attending live musicals, doing sudoku puzzles and attending his son's and grandchildren's school and sporting events.

Even as he went into hospice recently and was asked how many people he had touched through his life and ministry, he clearly spoke that it was due to him "having a big heart."

Unfortunately, many of the people he has touched along the way have passed, but to his surviving family members and friends, he will be remembered as a kind, gentle and spiritual man.

Dorsie is survived by his wife, Pat, of Columbus; son and daughter-in-law, Darren and Cassandra Ivy of Firth;  grandchildren, Josephine Ivy, Brooklyn Ivy and Aubrey Ivy; sister-in-law, Judy (Boe) Ivy of Las Vegas; sister-in-law, Jean (Clark) Mowry of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; brother-in-law, Jim (Alice Williams) Paris of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; nieces, Holly (Scott) Devore and children, Camryn and Mason, of Las Vegas; and Amy (Tim) Holmes of Omaha;

Dorsie was preceded in death by his parents, Dorsie Sr. and Billie Ivy; stepfather, John Fuller; brother, Stanley Ivy; grandparents, Orien and Sarah (Bantrup) Ivy and Evelyn (Radford) Hon.

The Federated Church in Columbus will be holding a memorial service for Dorsie on August 6, 2025, at 11:00 AM with a time to greet the family from 10:00 AM until service time, all at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Federated Church or for future family designation.
