Don was born April 29, 1935, to Lad and Edith (Jedlicka) Kabes in Stanton County and was raised in the Clarkson area.  Don graduated from Clarkson High School in 1953.  He served in the United States Navy 1955 – 1957 and was stationed in San Diego, CA and served on the USS JC Breckenridge.

Don was united in marriage to Almarine Barta on May 21, 1959 at SS. Cyril & Methodius Church in Clarkson.  The couple lived northwest of Clarkson on the family farm where he was born. He filled his days farming and raising livestock.

Don was a farmer, a father, a friend, a brother, a husband, a grand-father and a great-grand-father.  After raising 5 children and nearly 60 years on the farm, it was time for Don and Almarine to retire to Clarkson in 1991.  As Don began slowing down with his farming, he enjoyed hunting & fishing, traveling, spending time with grand-kids, and occasional visits to the local casinos.

One of his favorite activities were visits to the local coffee shop and visiting with other retired farmers and such. He loved keeping his brain sharp, by reading two daily newspapers, sudoku puzzles, word search and surfing the web to find his McDonald's coupons for weekly trips for their fast-food cravings.

Don loved playing card games, Sequence and any other game that allowed him to gather with friends and share laughs late into the evening.  Some of his favorite television included Judge Judy as well as Molly B, old game shows and watching any of the Husker sports.

Don refused to slow down, always looking for something to keep him busy. His most important weekly activity included mowing his lawn with his favorite John Deere mower, and keeping the landscaping well-trimmed. While his body was telling him no, his mind and spirit continued to push him forward.

He was active in the Catholic Church, having served on Parish Council and Holy Name Society. During his retirement, he helped with the church maintenance for many years.

Survivors include his wife Almarine of Clarkson, children: Tom Kabes (Sue) of Clarkson, Tim Kabes (Deb) of Stanton, Tamara Tanner of Fremont, Todd Kabes (Laurie) of San Antonio, Tx and Teresa Woodward (Scott) of Grand Island, NE.  10 grand-children and 13 great-grand-children.

Don is also survived by his sisters Marcella Suchan, Margie Wiese, Elaine Snyder (Ron) and sister-in-law's Marlene Kabes, Anita Steffensmeier (Alvin), Carolyn Barta, and brother-in-law Walter Eusterweimann, and many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents Lad and Edith Kabes, parents-in-law Lumir and Mary Barta, brother Leonard Kabes, sister & brother-in-law Janice Rueschhoff (Leo), sister-in-law Donna Eusterweimann, brothers-in-law Harold Suchan, Wilfred Wiese, Norbert Barta, Raymond Brabec, Marvin Stevens and nephews Richard Suchan, Gregg Rueshhoff, Robert Wiese and Jeff Brabec.
