Dan was born in Albion, Nebraska, on October 23, 1946, to Louis and Ione (Van Meter) Schleich.  Dan attended grade school in Petersburg, Nebraska, and graduated from Petersburg Public High School in 1966.  Dan joined the United States Air Force on June 15, 1966, and served during the Vietnam era in Thailand.  He was honorably discharged on January 30, 1970.  After discharge from the Air Force Danny worked at General Electric in Omaha, Behlen Manufacturing in Columbus, and the Schuyler Pack for 10 years.  He started Dan's Remodeling in 1978, which became D and D Construction, and then Schleich Construction until 2004.  Dan became a semi-truck driver, worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads, drove a concrete truck for Lyman Richie, and then worked maintenance for D&L and Tyson.

Dan was united in marriage to Darlene Johnson Fellers on May 1, 1980, at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus, NE.  Dan was a member of Peace for 44 years. In 1995, Dan and Darlene bought an acreage near Linwood which occupied Dan's time before and after he retired in 2008.

Dan helped work on several Habitat for Humanity Homes in Columbus.  If Darwin Anderson called Dan and asked if he wanted to help, Dan always did. He enjoyed the coffee bunch wherever he was, especially at Coffee Pot, Sapp Bros, Gene's, and Didier's.  Dan loved his children and grandchildren very much, and always wanted the best for them.
