Obituary

Former Columbus resident Bruce Loseke, 81, died Monday, June 16, 2025 at St. Joseph's Villa in David City, Nebraska.

Bruce M. Loseke was born February 14, 1944 in Columbus, Nebraska, to Elmer and Velma (Saalfeld) Loseke. He was baptized, attended grade school, and was confirmed in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. He graduated from Columbus High School, Norfolk Junior College, and Chadron State College.

When Bruce was two years old, the shin bone in his right leg broke. When the leg was set it was noticed that the bone had not developed correctly before birth. After several attempts, the doctors sent them to an Omaha hospital where more efforts were made by grafting bone from his other leg. The effects went on for years. His parents then took him to Mayo Clinic. They did more grafts but were not successful. The doctors advised amputation. This was done and the rest of his life he walked on an artificial right leg and a brace on his left leg. He was 12 years old before he could walk on two legs without crutches.

Following his schooling, he returned to Columbus where he worked several different jobs. After the death of his parents, he took a job working for Fargo Assemblies in David City, where he lived the rest of his life. After moving, he joined Redeemer Lutheran Church in David City. He has been a resident of St. Joseph's Villa for nearly 10 years.
