Betty L. Plankinton was born January 5, 1940, in Los Angles, California, to Ira and Evelyn (Sargent) Bebb. The family moved to Nebraska, then Oklahoma where Betty graduated from Claremore High School, Claremore, Oklahoma. The family returned to Nebraska where Betty attended Peru State College, earning a bachelor's degree in education. On February 25, 1961, Betty was united in marriage to Raymond Plankinton at the First Christian Church in Stella, Nebraska. To this union, three children were born: Richard, Ronald, and Zoann.
After living in Iowa and Wyoming for ten years, the family moved to Columbus in 1971 where Ray taught at Platte Community College and Betty began a 25-year career as a registered nurse at Columbus Community Hospital in the cardiac care unit and as a house supervisor. After her retirement from the hospital, Betty assisted in the development of the East Central Health Department. While working for the health department, she developed the response protocol for Bioterrorism and Pandemic Infections.
Betty enjoyed designing beautiful floral decorations, wedding cake tops and quilts. She loved spending time with her grandsons, whether it was proofreading a last-minute paper, several times in the middle of the night because it was due the next morning, or sitting through hours of heat/cold on hard bleachers to watch less than 30 seconds of a sprint.
