Wayne Coffey, 86, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, May 7, 2006 at Beverly Healthcare in Columbus. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 13, 2006 at St. Luke's United Church of Christ (1072 21st. Ave.) in Columbus with Jan Kline officiating. Private family interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery, with military honors by the American Legion Honor Guard, Hartman Post 84. Visitation will be on Friday, May 12, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to St. Luke's United Church of Christ Building Fund. There will be a lunch in the church fellowship hall directly following the service at the church. Wayne Coffey was born October 10, 1919 in rural Polk County to Roy and Lydia (Houser) Coffey. He grew up in the Columbus area, graduating from Kramer High School in 1937. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 15, 1941 in Ft. Logan, Colorado and was honorably discharged on October 23, 1945 at the Army Air Force Separation Base in Sioux City, Iowa. He earned several campaign ribbons for his service in WWII. Wayne married Helen B. Guenther on November 15, 1942 at the Evangelical Reformed Church (St. Luke's) in Columbus. Following Wayne's return from the war they began farming south of Columbus, eventually moving to a farm east of Columbus in 1949. They farmed at this location until retiring in 1983. During these years, Wayne served on numerous school board positions at District #9 east of Columbus. He also served as an original school board member of Lakeview High School. Wayne served over 20 years as a member of the Rural Volunteer Fire Department, again serving in numerous leadership roles. Wayne was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ and served in numerous church leadership positions. Wayne was a member of the VFW since 1971.
