Florence Austin
Florence R. Austin, 95 of Lincoln, Nebraska (formerly of Columbus, Nebraska) died Friday, November 18, 2005 at the Homestead Nursing Home in Lincoln. Graveside services will be held on Monday, November 21, 2005 at 1:30 PM at the Columbus Cemetery with Rev. Bill Ritter officiating. There will be no visitation. Florence Austin was born July 29, 1910 in Morrill, Nebraska to Stanley and Ruth (Scovell) Albertson. She graduated from Alliance High School, Alliance, Nebraska at the age of 16. After high school she worked in Alliance as deputy county clerk of Box Butte County. She met Milan Austin in the summer of 1932 and the two were married on August 7, 1935. The couple moved to Lincoln, Nebraska and later to Blair, Nebraska. In 1941 they moved to Newman Grove, Nebraska and in 1943 to Columbus. In 1947 they opened a farm management, real estate and insurance firm called The Austin Co. Florence, a co-organizer and owner of the firm, took an active part in the business from the day it opened. She functioned first as an insurance saleswoman and secretary and after 1956, as realtor. In 1973, Florence organized Austin Realty. She sold her interest in The Austin Co. in 1968, and in 1976 her interest in Austin Realty. Florence was a member of the state Judicial Nominating Commission, being appointed by Gov. Charles Thone. She served five years with Girl Scouts in Columbus and served on the Junior Achievement Board of Directors. She also served on the United Methodist Church Board of Trustees, and a member of the finance committee. In 1963 and 1964, she was president of the Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce. During her tenure, the Women's Division organized a travel and adventure series. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Music, and ticket chairman in 1968. She served on the boards of both the National and Nebraska Board of Realtors, serving as president in Nebraska in 1969. Florence was Queen Isabella in 1979. She was a past president of P.E.O. and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed gardening and raising roses.
