Milton was born September 9, 1911 near Atkinson, Nebraska to Archibald and Lydia (Emma) (Backhaus) McKathnie. He grew up 19 miles northeast of Atkinson with his parents, one brother, and one foster sister. He attended school at Holt County District 40 where he graduated from the 8th grade. After graduation he helped on the farm and hired out to some neighbors.
In December 1936 he married Alpha Johnson. Of this marriage, Ellen McKathnie was born. On June 7, 1950, Milton married Marjorie Rouse. Two children were born to this marriage, a son, Darrel and a daughter, Kay. Milton, Marjorie and the two children continued living on the homestead place until 1964 when they sold the ranch and moved to an acreage near Columbus, Nebraska. In Columbus he worked at the Platte County Soil Conservation District, a welding shop and at Dale Electronics. In 1977, Milton retired from Dale Electronics but continued his welding and hobbies in his shop on the acreage. He also made car parts for Shell Valley Motors of Columbus.
Milton enjoyed making clocks, glass etchings, and mirrors for his children and grandchildren. If anyone needed something done but did not know how or have the tools he would come to the rescue. He was always inventing little machines to do jobs easier and better. Milton received many suggestion awards while working at Dale's. He was also a 4-H leader in Holt County. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbus.

MISS ME - BUT LET ME GO

When I come to the end of the road,
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free.

Miss me a little, but not too long,
And not with your head bowed low,
Remember the love we once shared,
Miss me - but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take,
And each must go alone.
It's all a part of the Master's plan,
A step on the road to Home.

When you are lonely and sick at heart,
Go to friends we know.
Bury you sorrows in doing good deeds,
Miss me - but let me go.
