A Tribute to
Grandma
1 for the Money, 2 for the show, 3 to get ready and 4 to go!!
That was Grandma's favorite way to start a race and boy what a race she ran for 87 years.
Some of our fondest memories of Grandma are her cooking from her Christmas dinners to our favorites dishes and snacks, such as her pressed chicken, sugar cookies, angel food cake, marshmallow pie, canned goods and of course, her famous buns. Remember the kids table at the holiday dinners, some of us never graduated to the "Big" table.
Since Grandma couldn't drive she would look forward to having someone drive her up to Norfolk to pick up wienies from Roman's and the trip would not be complete without a stop in Madison during the apple season.
- Our earliest memories of Grandma are from the farm where we learned
many traits, like butchering the chickens, picking cherries, canning
corn, and of course everyone's favorite, gathering eggs ...... Right Suzy and Andrea?!?! Then after the work was done Grandma would have a special treat for us.
Then in 1973 they moved to town but Grandma always made sure we had plenty to do, from playing games, like Memory, Old Maid and Bingo to the walks over to Swanson's Market. Even the youngest had a special game with Grandma, the teddy bear that would eat the peanut. When we came to visit or spend the night we would bring in our bikes and skateboards to ride on the long driveway. Grandma would sit outside and watch us for hours, making sure we wouldn't go out in the street.
As time went on and our family grew, our children were fortunate enough to be able to visit Grandpa and Grandma and play with the same toys and games we grew up with. Grandma would quietly sit in
her chair with a smile on her face, remembering how many of us had enjoyed the same toys and games.
One of the most important lessons in life Grandma taught was to have a strong faith and through that faith developed a strong marriage that lasted 60 years. A favorite memory was from their 50th wedding anniversary party when they shared a kiss in front of the family. That was a special moment because they weren't affectionate in front of us kids.
Grandma will always be with us, especially when we see or plant a red geranium or wrap up in an afghan made by her.
We are reminded of David and
Goliath when we think of Grandma, she was small in stature with the willpower of David but had the strength of
Goliath.
Now it's 1 for the money, 2 for the show, 3 to get ready and 4 to go!
WE LOVE YOU GRANDMA!!!!
Service Folder
God saw you getting tired
And a cure was not to be
So He put his arms around you
And whispered "Come with Me."
With tearful eyes
We watched you suffer
And saw you fade away
Although we loved you dearly
We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating
Hardworking hands at rest
God broke our hearts to prove
He only takes the BEST.
It's lonesome here without you
We miss you more each day
Life doesn't seem the same
Since you've gone away.
When days are sad and lonely
And everything goes wrong
We seem to hear you whisper
"Cheer up and carry on."
Each time we see your picture
You seem to smile and say
"Don't cry, I'm in God's keeping
We'll meet again someday!"
