Carolyn "Kay" (Gakle) Mathews, 76, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died Thursday, January 7, 2010, in Lincoln. The funeral service will Wednesday, January 13, 10:00 A.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Ritter officiating. Interment will be in the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 3:00 - 7:00 P.M. with the family receiving friends from 5:30 - 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. There will be a funeral service in Lincoln on Tuesday, January 12 at 10:00 A.M. at the Roper & Sons Funeral Home (4300 "O" St) and a visitation on Monday from 2:00 - 7:00 P.M. with family receiving friends from 5:30 - 7:00 P.M. also at Roper & Sons Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Kay was born December 1, 1933, in Pawnee City, Nebraska to Robert E. And Elsie E. (Clark) Mathews. She was a graduate of Norfolk High School, Nebraska Methodist School of Nursing, received her BS degree from Central Michigan State University, and her MA degree from University of Minnesota. Kay was a resident of Lincoln, Beatrice, O’Neill, Columbus, and Superior, Nebraska. Her career included Director of Nursing, Lincoln General Hospital, Beatrice Community Hospital, registered nurse at Valley Hope Treatment Center, O’Neill, Columbus Hospital, taught nursing school at Platte Community College, Interim Director of Nursing at Auburn Community Hospital. Upon retirement, she served as Delta Delta Delta Sorority House Mother at the University of Nebraska. Kay was a member of P.E.O., Eastern Star, Methodist Church, and Rotary Clubs of Lincoln and Beatrice. She was a devoted Nebraska Football fan where she was a longtime season ticket-holder. Kay loved her family, especially her grandchildren and going to movies.
